Ranking the 10 biggest games of the last week of the NBA regular season

We've reached the final week of the 2022-23 NBA regular season and there's still plenty to sort out. The Western Conference is still so crowded that, mathematically speaking, the Los Angeles Lakers and New Orleans Pelicans could technically still land in eight different slots in the final standings. The Clippers, Warriors and Timberwolves aren't far behind at seven. There isn't a single team in either conference that has clinched a specific seed. In other words, there is plenty of relevant basketball left to be played over the next six days. So which games do you need to tune in for? Here are the 10 most important games of the final week of the season. 10. Celtics at 76ers, April 4 This game probably won't matter much in the standings. There are at least two games worth of separation between each of the top eight teams in the Eastern Conference as of this writing, so barring something surpri...

Damian Lillard update: Blazers star to sit out rest of season with team out of playoff contention, per report

The Portland Trail Blazers plan to shut down star guard Damian Lillard for the remainder of the season , according to Chris Haynes. Lillard has been dealing with a calf injury that has kept him out of the team's last three Game s.  With Lillard out of the lineup, the Blazers have lost all three of those games to continue a late-season slide that has essentially eliminated them from play-in tournament contention. They have dropped nine of their last 10 games to fall to 32-43 on the season, and are now five games back of the Oklahoma City Thunder for the No. 10 spot in the Western Conference.  After playing just 29 Game s last season due to abdominal surgery, Lillard was again hampered by various injuries, most notably continuous calf problems. As a result, he was limited to 58 Game s this time around, but was fantastic when he did play. He averaged a career-high 32.2 points, 4.8 rebounds and 7.3 assists, was n...

Jokic vs. Embiid vs. Giannis: What each NBA MVP front-runner needs to do down the stretch to lock in my vote

With less than two weeks to go in the NBA's regular season, the race for the game's Most Valuable Player award is wide open. And so is my vote. There are several reasons for that, and perhaps a few things that can happen over each of the candidate's handful of remaining regular-season games to sway me, the other voters and the direction of the award itself. For starters, at least for me, this year's MVP award is a three-way race between Giannis Antetokounmpo, Joel Embiid and Nikola Jokic. All three have strong cases for their candidacy. And if you must -- and we must -- there are cases to be made against each of them. This is the trickiest MVP voting ballot in memory, and certainly my most difficult one.  It's a conversation for fans, players and the league -- and a similarly stressful assessment for voters -- that's been super-charged with issues and...

Ranking NBA's top 50 players in 2022-23 season: Jokic, Giannis battle for No. 1; LeBron falls out of top 10

Prior to the 2022-23 NBA regular season, we published our CBS Sports Top 100 players list . We based that ranking on who we believed was in store for the best season. It was, in other words, a projection. Now that we're coming our of the All-Star break, we don't have to project anymore. We have evidence on which we can base an updated list. So that's what we did, only this time we limited it to the top 50 players.  To be clear, this is not a ranking of who we, as a staff, believe to be the best 50 players in the NBA overall. Rather, these are the 50 players, in order, that we believe are having the best 2022-23 season so far. Keep that distinction in mind as you scroll through.   And with that, let's get to the list. As always, we invite your feedback at @CBSSportsNBA.  50. Brandon Ingram, Pelicans (Preseason rank: 27) ...
