Quick facts When is it? Every January 31st Tagged as Economy Government & Legal What's the hashtag? #AppreciateYourSocialSecurityCheckDay Have we missed something? As an independent federal agency, the Social Security Administration is based in Baltimore, Maryland and employs at least 60,000 people to keep those benefits flowing to millions of people. Appreciate Your Social Security Check Day is a time to be thankful for all of them! History of Appreciate Your Social Security Check Day Although the official Social Security Administration (SSA) of the United States was signed into law by President Roosevelt in 1935, the idea of the people of societies taking care of those who need help goes back much further than this. This was particularly needed as the plan was created and implemented when the country was in the throes of the Great Depression. Although it was signed into law in 1935, it took a few years for the system to get up and running. The firs

Carlos Diaz: The Man Who Contacted UFOs

Image
One morning in January 1981, Mexican photographer Carlos Diaz pulled into an abandoned parking lot in Ajusco Park near Mexico City. He had an assignment for a magazine and made an appointment with a journalist who was due to arrive. Diaz sat in his car, getting the camera ready for the job ahead. Although it was early in the morning, the air was thick and humid, making even sitting still uncomfortable. Diaz looked at his watch impatiently. Suddenly, his attention was drawn to a strange yellow glow emanating from the valley below him. At first he thought it was a forest fire, but a moment later the light source turned out to be a large orange oval UFO hovering slowly about 30 meters from his car. Unable to believe his feelings, Diaz quickly grabbed the camera. Leaning on the steering wheel, he began to fire frantically. Then, without warning, the whole car began to shake violently. Diaz got out of the car and took two more shots before the machine accelerated vertically

76ers vs. Nuggets: James Harden leaves bench mid-play, deflects ball leading to technical foul on Philadelphia

Philadelphia 76ers star guard James Harden decided to try a new form of defense late in the third quarter of the contest between the Sixers and Denver Nuggets on Saturday afternoon.  With just under two minutes remaining in the quarter, Harden was seated on Philly's bench and jumped directly onto the floor to deflect a pass from Bones Hyland in the corner. That tipped pass went right into the hands of Sixers forward Georges Niang, but the referees weren't having it. The play was blown dead, and the Sixers were hit with a technical foul for having just four players on the floor prior to Harden's jump into action.  You can see the comical play below:  James Harden is playing defense from the bench 😂pic.twitter.com/HM7fG0P6FH — CBS Sports (@CBSSports) January 28, 2023 Even though it didn't work in Philadelphia's favor, you have to give Harden credit for trying,

Blue Protocol Will Automatically Create New Lobbies When They Fill

Good news and bad news for fans excited about Blue Protocol, the upcoming free-to-play MMO from Bandai Namco and Amazon. The good news is that we finally know how the Game will handle lobby balance and how many players will be able to go dungeon crawling at once. The bad news is that we might have to wait a little bit longer to experience the Game ourselves. Bad news out of the way first: Bandai Namco has delayed its network test to later in March. The Japanese developer hasn't given us a specific date for when closed beta tests will begin, but delaying the network test probably means that the beta test will be delayed too, we just won't know by how long. Lakers' Anthony Davis picks up where he left off with strong return performance in win vs. Spurs

Anthony Davis gave Los Angeles Lakers fans quite a scare at the end of the third quarter against the San Antonio Spurs Wednesday night. The All-Star big man, return ing to the lineup for the first time since Dec. 16, fell to the floor and grabbed at his ankle seemingly in pain in a scene that has sadly grown all too familiar to Laker fans, but he quickly got up, sank three free throws and remained in the Game . Darvin Ham even joked that he nearly passed out seeing Davis on the ground, but in the end, it was all smiles after Davis' return to the lineup following a five-week absence. For the first time since he was a member of the New Orleans Pelicans, Davis came off of the bench in an NBA Game . That didn't slow him down one bit, and despite a minutes limit, he wound up leading the Lakers in scoring. The final tally: 21 points, 12 rebounds and four blocks in just 26 minutes as the Lakers picked up their

Amazon workers hold first UK strike, adding to labor turmoil

Amazon warehouse workers have gone on strike for the first time in Britain in a dispute over pay and working conditions LONDON -- Amazon warehouse workers went on strike for the first time in Britain on Wednesday because of a dispute over pay and working conditions, adding to a wave of industrial labor action across the country fueled by the soaring cost of living. Union members voted to walk off the job for one day at the e-commerce giant's fulfillment center in Coventry, a city about 100 miles (160 kilometers) northwest of London near Birmingham. Amanda Gearing, a senior organizer with the GMB union, said Amazon staff who worked through tough conditions during the COVID-19 pandemic are just “trying to get decent pay." Another big issue is performance targets set by an algorithm that piles extra pressure on workers , she said. The union is fighting for a bigger pay raise than the company's offer, which it says amounts to an extra 50 pence (61 cents) an hour. Amazon, w

Tech layoffs 2023: Companies that have made cuts

Image
Companies across the tech industry, including Vox Media, Amazon, Microsoft, and Google, have made major cuts in 2023. Companies across the tech industry have announced layoffs , affecting thousands of workers in the first few weeks of 2023. Company officials have often cited economic uncertainty and fears of a recession in their job-cutting, cost-cutting decisions. It follows a volatile 2022, which was also marred with layoffs by the thousands across major tech brands. Google Alphabet Inc., the parent company of Google, said it will cut roughly 12,000 jobs from its global workforce on Friday, Jan. 20. The decision will impact approximately 6% of the company's employees. "This will mean saying goodbye to some incredibly talented people we worked hard to hire and have loved working with," said Google's CEO Sundar Pichai in an email to Google employees on Friday morning. Warriors' Draymond Green hints at when he'd like to retire: 'I don't want to play basketball until I'm 40'

However this season turns out for the Golden State Warriors, the biggest decision they could potentially face this summer will be whether to keep Draymond Green, who is in line to become a free agent should he choose to do so. Green has a $27.5 million player option for next season, and if he exercises it, the Warriors, barring a trade, won't have a decision to make. But if he doesn't, a call will have to be made against the backdrop of a giant payroll and tax bill.  Wherever Green gets his next contract, it could be one of this last. Talking with Stephen A Smith on the Know Mercy podcast, Green said he only wants to play for "another four years" after this season.  "I don't want to play basketball until I'm 40. I really only want to play basketball for another four years after this. I've always said my magic number is 15 [years]. Once I get to 15, that's it," Green sa

Why Arsenal are unlikely to sign Moussa Diaby

Arsenal are unlikely to sign France winger Moussa Diaby from Bayer Leverkusen this transfer window, sources have told 90min . The Gunners are looking to add another forward to their ranks this window, though have already missed out on the signing of top target Mykhaylo Mudryk to London rivals Chelsea. They have recently been linked with a move for Diaby, though 90min understands that such a transfer is currently unlikely. While sources close to Arsenal insist the club were first approached by the 23-year-old's representatives, the player's camp believe the opposite to be true. Nevertheless, both parties do not believe that a deal will be thrashed out this window. On this edition of Talking Transfers, Scott Saunders hosts Toby Cudworth & Graeme Bailey to discuss all the big transfer stories. This week's agenda includes Jude Bellingham, Harry Kane, Declan Rice, Hakim Ziyech, Leandro Trossard, Pedro Porro, Mykhaylo Mudryk and more! If you can’t see this embed, click her

Brighton's stance on Leandro Trossard January exit

Brighton will not be bullied into an enforced sale of forward Leandro Trossard, who has demanded a January exit after being banished from the first team squad. Josy Comhair, Trossard's agent, delivered a statement before the weekend urging the Seagulls to allow the Belgium international to leave this month, claiming he had been frozen out of the team by manager Roberto De Zerbi. Trossard's actions have angered the club, 90min understands, and an exit will only be granted if their demands are met by an asking team. Elden Ring Players Share The Most Evil Deeds They've Ever Witnessed

While FromSoftware Game s always encourage a bit of jolly cooperation among players, the Game s are often designed in a way that lets you commit horrible acts of violence that other people can nothing about except sit back and watch. Elden Ring is no exception, as fans of the Game have been sharing the evilest deeds they've ever witnessed during their time in The Lands Between on the Game 's subreddit. To kick things off, u/apexPrickle recounts the time when they were summoned to help a host beat a particularly tricky boss, only to have their generosity thrown back in their face. Just before the fight ended, the host severed the connection with the player to ensure they didn't get any runes or a Rune Arc for their efforts, a deed which u/apexPrickle calls "the most egregious assholery" they've ever experienced in the Game . Destiny 2 Bug Is Deleting Entire Characters

Destiny 2 allows you to make up to three different characters, so players can have a Warlock, Titan, and Hunter each. However, a bug is apparently deleting these characters randomly, which is concering considering the time it takes to level up all of them. Posted on the r/DestinyThe Game subreddit, user CyanSolar expressed their grief as they selected their Titan character and tried to log in as usual. However, a "Contacting Destiny 2 servers" message showed up at the bottom which took them back to the character select screen, only to find out that the Titan had magically disappeared. They even provided proof that the character is really gone as their profile now shows only the Warlock and Hunter.
