The Last of Us Part 3 Might Not Be Naughty Dog's Next Big Game

It's been a while since we've heard any big news come from Naughty Dog about their upcoming projects, with the only known title coming from the studio being a currently unnamed multiplayer Game set in the universe of The Last of Us. However, Naughty Dog co-president Neil Druckmann has revealed that work on the studio's next big title has already started, and it may not be The Last of Us Part 3 despite the series renewed popularity.

Speaking in an interview with Kinda Funny, Druckmann explains that Naughty Dog is in the unique position that allows it to make whatever the team is most excited about, with very little pressure from PlayStation to churn out sequels. Because of this, Naughty Dog is allowed to explore a number of different projects, some of them sequels and some of them entirely new ideas. Druckmann doesn't reveal which Naughty Dog's next big title is going to be, although he is aware of the demand for The Last of Us Part 3.

"At the end of every project we purposefully explore several different projects. Some of them might be a sequel, and then a bunch of new ideas, and then we really feel like "where do our passions lie". That's the fire that has to sustain for years to come, because if you pick the wrong project and you burn out from that idea because you weren't that passionate about it two years into it on a four year project, you're fucked."

"I know the fans really want TLOU Part 3, I hear about it all the time and all I can say is that we're already into our next project. The decision has already been made - I can't say what it is but that's the process we went through. There was a lot of consideration of different things, and we picked the thing we were most excited for."

There are a couple of ways to read into that statement, but the prevailing theory is that this is Druckmann implying that Naughty Dog's next big title won't be related to The Last of Us and that the team is moving onto something new. Of course, he never explicitly states that the project isn't The Last of Us Part 3, but Druckmann's comments about Naughty Dog constantly coming up with new ideas and specfically mentioning Part 3 can be interpreted as the creator attempting to soften the blow for anyone with their fingers crossed.

You could also read into Druckmann's comments about burnout as a potential signal that Naughty Dog wants to work on something else for the time being. If you exclude Uncharted: The Legacy of Thieves that launched in January last year, Naughty Dog has constantly been working on The Last of Us series since Uncharted 4 released back in 2017. After working on the same series for almost 6 years, it's possible Naughty Dog could be a little burned out, and a shift to something different could be a welcome change for fans and devs alike.
